Every year, more than 6 million of American are facing the infertility issue. One of the common used fertility treatment is called In Vitro Fertilization, aka IVF.
During IVF, the sperm fertilizes the egg outside the body. The egg is then implanted by the doctor into the woman’s uterus with the hope that this will lead to a successful pregnancy.
How does In Vitro Fertilization work?
The process of IVF involves 4 basic steps:
Most women start their menstrual cycle with a crop of eggs, and halfway through the cycle, they are left with one mature egg. Stimulation causes the ovaries to produce many mature eggs using fertility medications.
Once the eggs mature the patient is ready for the egg retrieval process. During retrieval, the patient is mildly sedated, and the doctor uses an aspiration needle and ultrasound guidance to retrieve the mature eggs. This process is done vaginally, leaving no scars.
The eggs are removed from the needle and given to an embryologist who places the eggs into a small dish (not a test tube). After retrieval the eggs are ready for fertilization.
Fertilization can be done where the sperm are placed in the dish with the eggs and the fastest, most ambitious sperm will fertilize the egg. In cases where the sperm lacks motility, fertilization is induced through intracytoplasmic sperm injection, where the sperm is directly injected into the egg.
After fertilization, the embryos are put in gas incubators to simulate the environment of the uterus. After three to five days the embryos are transferred to the woman’s uterus using a catheter through the cervix.
Depending on the quality of the embryos, the chances of the procedure resulting in a successful pregnancy are anywhere from 20-70%.

How much does In Vitro Fertilization cost?
IVF cost will always be expensive because it is a highly involved infertility technique and on average costs more than something like tubal reversal if that is an option for you.
No matter where you go, you can expect to pay about $15,000 for an average procedure. You may be able to find a place that will do it for $12,000. Some places may even charge $10,000, but with places like this you can almost expect for them to have hidden charges that they aren’t letting you know about right away. This is the basic surgical fee for the process. All the services included in the surgery are included in this number, including fertility drugs, ultrasounds, and anything else that this fertility option may need. The surgical fee also helps cover high-tech surgery tools and instruments.
Cheaper or natural alternative for Vitro Fertilization(IVF)?
IVF is normally not a good option for most infertility patients, not only because the procedure is extremely expensive, but also because the success rate is only 20% – 70%. The low end is not even 50%. But fortunately there are many more natural and cheaper alternatives available nowadays. One of the most common method is called “Pregnacy Miracle” from Dr Lisa Olson.
